Li Ka-Shing Center

McCarthy partnered with UC Berkeley to deliver the 200,000-sf Li Ka-Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences—a LEED Gold-certified facility advancing groundbreaking research in cancer, stem cell, infectious, and neurodegenerative diseases. Featuring a vivarium, MRI-equipped brain imaging center, teaching labs, a 300-seat auditorium, and striking architectural finishes, the project overcame significant logistical and design challenges through a phased delivery approach and intensive BIM coordination. Strategically located at the campus’s main gateway, this state-of-the-art center sets a new benchmark for collaborative scientific research and education. The complex exterior skin system—with 15 distinct elevations and a mix of concrete, terracotta, metal, and glass—showcases craftsmanship and sustainability. McCarthy’s Integrated Project Team Approach allowed construction to begin before full funding or interior design completion, proving essential to delivering the high-impact facility ahead of schedule and to the University’s high standards.
