Purpose-Built for Recovery: Advancing Rehabilitative Care at UC Davis Health
Sacramento, CA
Completed in 2023, the UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital is Sacramento County’s first freestanding inpatient rehabilitation facility, delivered by McCarthy Building Companies in partnership with UC Davis Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation. This 58,000-square-foot, 52-bed hospital more than doubled the health system’s rehab capacity and includes specialized spaces such as a 12-bed brain injury unit, bariatric suites, and therapy gyms equipped with cutting-edge technology, including an exoskeleton and augmented reality systems. Designed for healing and independence, the facility also features adaptive living units and an outdoor therapeutic courtyard with pickleball and walking paths. Built with prefabricated systems and resilient infrastructure, the hospital can operate independently for up to 72 hours. The project earned an ENR California Award of Merit in Healthcare for its innovation, efficiency, and impact.
